Custom Railings
- What types of railings do you build?
- We build custom railings for interior stairs and landings, exterior steps and stoops, porches, decks, balconies and walkways, for both homes and commercial properties.
- Why choose a custom railing over a stock one?
- A custom railing is made from measurements taken at your property, so it fits the stairs, posts and mounting surfaces you actually have, and it can be designed to match the style of the building.
- What is the difference between interior and exterior railings?
- Interior railings are seen up close every day, so proportions and detail matter most. Exterior railings also need to handle rain, snow and salt, and are usually anchored into concrete, stone or masonry.
Aluminum vs Iron and Steel
- Should I choose aluminum or steel for my railing?
- Aluminum is lighter, does not rust and suits clean, modern designs, which makes it popular outdoors. Steel and iron allow heavier, more traditional or ornamental designs and can match existing ironwork. The right choice depends on the location and the look you want.
- Do you work with both materials?
- Yes. We work with aluminum, steel and iron, and can recommend an option for your project after seeing the space.
Gates
- What kinds of gates do you make?
- We make custom driveway gates and pedestrian gates for walkways, side yards and garden entries, sized to the opening and designed to match fencing or railings.
- What affects the design of a driveway gate?
- The width of the opening, the slope of the ground, the space available for the gate to open and the posts or columns it will hang from all shape whether a swing or sliding gate makes sense.
Window Guards
- Are window guards made to fit each window?
- Yes. Every window is measured individually so the guard fits cleanly and looks like part of the building.
- Is there anything to consider before adding window guards to a bedroom?
- Yes. Think about how the room is used and any local fire-safety requirements for emergency exit. We can discuss options with you before installation.
Balconies
- Do you build balcony railings?
- Yes. We fabricate and install balcony railings and guardrails, including replacements, for homes and multi-unit or commercial buildings.
- Can balcony railings match other metalwork on the building?
- Yes. Balcony railings can be designed to match stair railings, window guards or fencing for a consistent look.
Measurements and Estimates
- How do I get an estimate?
- Use our free estimate form or call us. Describe the project and attach photos if you have them. We then schedule a visit to take measurements.
- Is the estimate free?
- Yes. Estimates are free and there is no obligation.
- Why do you measure on site?
- Stairs, openings and mounting surfaces are rarely perfectly uniform. Measuring on site lets us fabricate ironwork that fits the space instead of adapting generic parts.
Installation Process
- What are the steps of a typical project?
- You request an estimate, we measure on site and confirm the design with you, the work is fabricated for your project, and then we install it and check fit and finish.
- Do I need a permit?
- It depends on your town and the type of work. Requirements for railings and guards are set by local code and can differ by location, so check with your local building department.
Maintenance
- How should I care for exterior railings and gates?
- Rinse off dirt and road salt periodically, wash with mild soap and water, check posts and hinges for looseness, and address chips or scratches in the finish early.
- Can you repair damaged ironwork?
- Yes. We repair and reweld loose or broken railings, sagging gates and damaged fence sections. Photos of the damage help us assess it before visiting.
